Attachment Joining & Tensioning
1. Attachment
a) To end post
- Attach rail to end of buckle
- Attach buckle to end of post
b) To line posts
- For normal use. [Flat brackets]
- For Top of Post attachment so the rail is attached flush to the top of the post. [Top of post brackets]
- For inside corners, where the rail is mounted on the inside of a curve, such as an arena. [Inside brackets]
They may be attached using four self tapping screws, a staple top and bottom or two staples at the top and two at the bottom. The latter is recommended where there is extra tension such as on an inside rail.
2. Joining Rail

Ensure that the end of the rail has been cut square, using a square. Slide the end of the rail approx 50mm (2") through the end slot of the buckle: Use the leverage of the buckle to bend the rail 180 degrees back onto itself. Remove the buckles and repeat with end of other rail. Remove buckle.
Slide the end through the middle slot (come in throughthe side with the edges) in the buckle and around the bend in the rail. Draw the bent end of the rail back into the first slot. Repeat this with the other rail.
3. Tensioning
The Spooler is used to tension Horserail:
- As the spooler has limited rail storage capacity, the initial rail tension should be done by hand before tensioning. (Ensure all that rail is attached to all line post at the correct height)
- Always keep the hub of the Spooler at right angles to the rail
- For a neat appearance at the end posts, rotate the spooler in a direction that keeps the rail on the same side of the Spooler hub as the posts.
- To make the installation easier and safer, use two ratchet handles (one at each end of the Spooler hub) for tightening.
- Always pull with both handles. Hold with one and ratchet back with the other and hold. Ratchet back with the first, before pulling with both again.
- Practice first. Get someone to lightly hold the hub and practice the sequence of ratcheting the spooler with two 12 mm (1/2") drive handles
- When tensioning, use two people: one to ratchet, one to assist with the alignment and to lock the pins on place.
- Always pull the handles towards you, NOT away from you. Please be careful.
- Don't over tension the rail.
- Safety First - use safety eyeglasses and gloves.
It is not as economical to have a spooler at each end of a short fence (less than 100 meters). One positioned at one end will be adequate. One Spooler in the middle is acceptable especially when there is a top horizontal post or pipe.
Using In-Line Permanent Wire Strainers
The use of these ratchet style permanent in line wire strainers is desirable in some situations. These include the tensioning of coated wires. Where Horserail is not square to the end assembly post, (The Spooler does not suit being used in these circumstances) it likes (must be) square to the end post. End post buckles are designed for this situation when using individual permanent in line wire strainers.
The plastic web needs to be striped off the wire with two 45o slithers being cut off each edge of the rail. The web is carefully cut (separated) from the thicker plastic near the wire. Then using a pair of pliers, grip the wire and tear the web away from the wire on each side until you have enough for your purposes. We believe that the strainers should be attached to the post using a collar of rail. Horsecote or plain wire can be used for this purpose.
